I think it's horrible that the police panicked and shot the bear. It's unlikely a black bear will hurt humans. We've dealt with them before. It's a shame as well that police are untrained in that and received no help.

I read with great interest the ideas on creating a walkway bewtween St Paul & Market Street. These lands were created when the City of Burlington, Conservation Halton and the Ministry of Natiural Resources allowed the abutting land owners to fill in Lake Ontario and construct at their expense a seawall approved by all three government bodies. The City of Burlington contributed by paying for the shoreline protection at the end of Market Street and St Paul. The end result was that the owners were to purchase subject lands. Houses were sold and this sale fell through the cracks. However one of the land owners launched a law suit against one of the sellers as it was represented that the purchaser would own to the Lake. In this law suit the most westerly land owner was allowed in the court decision to place a fence along this parcel of land they had created. Thereby restricting public access. These documents are available.

These homeowners backing onto the Lake have enjoyed quiet enjoyment of their backyards same as the rest of the residents of Burlington. Police have been called occasionaly when younger partiers were using the wall as a glass shattering excercise. Recently a young toddler was just stopped in time from falling over this 30 foot high cliff. I think fences are a great safety feature if some one gets sued will it be the City. I think a fence should be installed by these residents immediately to prevent them and the City from being sued.

I think if we are looking to be the engaging community we should perhaps engage the residents who actually created these lands and paid 100% for the cost of this wall behind their lands. In hindsight perhaps they should not have reclaimed these lands as they are now looking at being penalized. These land owners are in the process of engagng legal counsel. And by the way I know James Ziegle and he would be a great addition to the waterfront group.

Excuse my spelling mistakes.

Seeing this article reminded me I had not heard back from you on weather you wished to try again for the Rose Awards in your paper.
I am willing to provide you a selection of photographs of some of the plaque winners after the judging so you do not have to do all the photo work...and you could cover the presentation ceremony in September....
Would also like to see our Nomination form on your site...please call or email..thanks Lawry Ellis
905-336-1246
EdNote:
Yes Larry - we will put the nomination form up on the site. Last year, while you were in Europe vacationing, we were out taking pictures on a day when for the first time in my life I suffered heat stroke. That assignment didn't get finished and we didn't get to the winners announcement event either.
We will try to do better by you this year.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing Stephen left out is the destruction of the core's heritage district that Council is allowing to happen.

Its great to have community gardens in Burlington again - congratulations to all. The Parks & Rec people used to run community gardens for Burlington citizens in the 1970's on MTO land on Brant Street where the Brant St QEW intersection is now. Now to encourage more Burlington residents to turn their front or back yards into gardens or to plant balcony gardens on apartment buildings.

Mark - what is the number of the bill that will change the Fisheries Act? Do you have a template of a letter to send to our MPs to let them know this is not acceptable?

Editors note: The government has wrapped a whole bunch of stuff into a single bill thgat is now before the House of Commons. It is basically their budget bill. Inquiries can and should be directed to the local MP.

Despite the public perception, the City of Burlington does not own Burlington Hydro. It is a separate entity unrelated to the municipal government, so your statement that "the gift was just moving money from one pocket to the other" is quite incorrect.
Editor's note:
I checked with the city solicitor and she advised me that there is just one class of share in Burlington Hydro, which is a private company, and all the shares are owned by the city of Burlington.
Burlington Hydro distributes its revenue by way of a dividend it pays the city.
While Hydro is not a department of the city it is most definitely owned by the city.
The delay in approving this comment was to be certain that our facts are correct.
